I’VE GOT NOTHING. REALLY.

Seinfeld, YouTube May 12, 2020 – The Nothing Pitch

JerryWell, what’s the show about?

GeorgeIt’s about nothing.

JerryNo story?

George Nah, forget the story.

Jerry You gotta have a story.

George Who says, you gotta have a story?

I’ve got nothing. It is not that my mind is empty of thoughts, tribulations, or worries. I am distracted. Distracted perhaps by too many thoughts, distracted by dust on the fan blades, odd spots on the wall, crooked pictures… And I am very distracted by Netflix.

I get home from work, eat, pick up and then I am ready for my warm bed (heating pad), my laptop and watching TV. Soothed by the warmth, and reclined results in quick slumber and then awakening to catch the last minutes of the episode. When I realize I fell asleep five minutes in I start it over again. Repeat. Repeat. This is no way to enjoy a show and it is a pattern that is horrible for sleep hygiene, but I persist, watching and rewatching the same episode of the same show. This cycle of bad behavior also means that I am not doing any reading.

In my MFA school days, I’d plow through four or more books a month. My bed was littered with a novel or two. Now, the same sad title moves from the nightstand to my bed and back to the stand with a few pages read and laid again in a lump of covers.

Perhaps with my new glasses, I will read more. My distance vision has improved, but for almost anything else I am more and more dependent upon my reading glasses…for the computer, reading labels on cans, reading instructions, texting. It is an annoying transition, but there are worse.

while I always have something to say, and I am seldom without words, I have not been able to put pen to paper – I write in longhand and then the computer. Oh, but good news, I am working on a piece about a recent Celine Dion concert. It was an amazing show and a check-off on my bucket list.

The promise of spring teases, the days are long and bright, day two working remotely with my son doing the same – we both are still alive… twelve days and counting… How you doin’?
